The Jr. Jr. debate continues….

It’s no secret I’ve said Dale Jr. needs a new crew chief for several races now.  I’ve been stating that before it became fashionable this year.

The question isn’t about the talent of either cousin.  The question is, can they merge their talent into a successful team?  The answer, so far, seems to be no.

“…Do the math: 16 wins in 209 races without Eury Jr. on top of the pit box; 2 wins in 123 races with Eury Jr. calling the shots…”      from NASCAR.com

No one is disputing the close bond between the cousins.  It can be likened to any relationship where, unfortunately, the longevity of the partnership hasn’t created cohesiveness, but stubborn friction and frustration.   Both sides believe their point of view is the only correct one,  they are often unwilling to meet in the middle and suffer from selective hearing.    [Does this sound like your parents?]

It seems obvious to outsiders that the longstanding affiliation Jr. and Jr. share is inhibiting their growth as a team.   But, like any dysfunctional relationship, the parties involved always seem to be the last to figure it out.

The time frame for Dale Jr. to achieve multiple  championships is slipping away quickly.   The way things are going, a multiple winning season seems beyond reach.  This mounting pressure on NASCAR’s most popular driver to win, may force his owner, Rick Hendrick, to step in and do what’s necessary.  A new crew chief will help Jr. focus on the job at hand without all the baggage of a past relationship to bog it down.  Fresh perspectives will be a benefit to both driver and crew chief and would rejuvenate the entire team.

Like any breakup, the short term will be painful, but in the long run, Dale Jr. will be asking himself why he waited so long.
